Find your fit
Who it is for
It is suited to a small business that wants basic accounting and invoicing together, especially one replacing spreadsheets for transaction tracking. An owner can review what is owed and what the business has earned, while an accountant can use the underlying categories and reports. Check the business’s jurisdiction and accountant’s needs before treating a general report list as tax advice.
The vendor also sells billing features, but ZipBooks is more than an invoice sender: its accounting page describes a chart of accounts, bank reconciliation, a general ledger and balance-sheet or income-statement reporting. That makes Accounting the useful primary category for this profile.
The work it supports
Core capabilities
ZipBooks calls its chart of accounts Categories. Common categories are provided, and custom ones can be added to reflect the business’s own revenue or expense lines. Before importing historical data, have the bookkeeper decide how sales, assets, liabilities and expense categories should map.
A connected bank can bring transactions into ZipBooks and initially categorize them. The help center warns that categories may need correction. Review a small statement period against the bank source before trusting automatic categorization, especially for transfers, asset purchases or unusual receipts.
Transactions can also be entered manually with a category and the account used to pay. That affects more than one balance in the books. Test a representative expense and a transfer with the accountant’s expected categories before bulk importing or changing a completed period.
A user can select several transactions for bulk categorization, but the help center says the bulk categorize/edit action requires Sophisticated. On a lower tier, compare the time required for individual corrections before assuming the bank import will remove routine bookkeeping work.
The dedicated Reconciliation view compares opening and closing balances from the bank statement with the ZipBooks ledger, then asks the user to verify transactions. A zero difference is a useful checkpoint, but investigate missing or duplicated transactions rather than forcing the books to match.
Customer invoices and reminders sit beside the accounting records. A payment can be linked from an imported bank transaction or logged manually, and a mistaken recorded payment can be edited or removed from Transactions. Reconcile that payment to the real bank or processor record; changing an invoice status is not proof that money was received.
The accounting page lists receivables, balance sheet, general ledger, income statement, taxes invoiced and trial balance views. The help guide also shows journal and ledger filters and export. Compare one reporting period against known totals and ask the accountant which exports are needed at year end.

Pricing and getting started
Starter is shown as Free on the current pricing page, with unlimited invoices, customers and vendors, basic reports and one bank connection. It can be a low-cost way to test invoices and a simple book, but a team needing multiple banks or the dedicated reconciliation module must look at higher tiers.
Smarter adds recurring invoices, automatic billing/reminders, saved line items, multiple bank connections, time tracking and five team members. Sophisticated adds tagging, full reconciliation, completed-book locking, richer reports and unlimited users. Match those rights to the actual bookkeeping process rather than buying solely from the headline tier name.
The visible pricing capture displays 15 beside Smarter and 35 beside Sophisticated, but does not clearly label the currency or billing period in extracted text. Confirm a dated checkout or vendor quote for the selected country, term, payment processing fees and any tax before budgeting; this profile does not treat the numerals as a monthly price.

Before you choose
A controlled trial can use fictional invoices and a small, non-sensitive transaction sample: establish categories, enter an expense, inspect imported categories, compare a statement month, then open the ledger and income statement. Keep real bank credentials and customer payments out of a casual test.
Before migration, verify bank-connection coverage, the plan’s reconciliation and bulk-edit rights, invoice-payment recording, reports and exports. The current help pages distinguish imported information from a verified bank statement; assign responsibility for reviewing exceptions before relying on the balances.
