Workast

What it does

Workast turns tasks discussed in Slack into assigned work that a team can track. A message can become a task with an owner and due date, while a Space groups tasks for a project, event or team. The product makes most sense for organizations that already coordinate in Slack and want a clearer record of what was agreed.

Who it is for

A small Slack-centered team can use Essential to capture, assign and finish tasks without moving into a separate work app. Teams that need browser-based boards, lists, calendar views, reports or outside collaborators should examine Standard. Professional matters when advanced task structure such as dependencies, time tracking or templates will be used regularly.

Workast can also organize work into Spaces connected to Slack channels. This suits a team that wants project tasks to stay near the conversation that produced them, while paid privacy and guest rules matter when contractors or confidential channels are involved.

Core capabilities

In Slack, a teammate can use /todo, a shortcut or a message action to create a Workast task. A converted message becomes an editable task title; the author can choose the Space or list, add an assignee and set a due date. That makes a decision in a busy channel less likely to remain only a chat message.

A Space can represent a project, event, department or team. One Slack channel can link to one Space, and people in the channel can see tasks created there. Check the channel and Space before converting a message, since that choice determines who can see the new task.

Tasks can carry subtasks, files, comments, recurring dates and ownership. Workast also sends task updates and due reminders in Slack. For repeated handoffs, a manager can set a recurring task rather than recreate the same follow-up each time.

The browser product offers list, board, calendar and timeline ways to inspect work on eligible plans. A board can show progress through stages, while a calendar or timeline helps review due dates and sequence. Essential remains a Slack-only task workflow, so check the plan before relying on a web view.

For more complex work, dependencies show when one task waits for another. Help places this on Professional and Enterprise; Standard's limited advanced-feature uses should not be mistaken for an ongoing dependency entitlement. Try one small fictional chain to check how the team notices blocked work.

A Space connected to a public Slack channel is public, and a Space connected to a private channel is private. Private-channel task creation and private Workast Spaces require a paid plan. Review both the Slack channel membership and the Workast Space privacy setting before using a task for sensitive work.

Paid teams can invite guest accounts to specific Spaces. Guests can work on tasks in Spaces they are invited to but cannot join or create other Spaces on their own. A Slack guest also needs a Workast guest account before interacting with Workast tasks, so test access with a fictional project and intended role.

Pricing and getting started

Essential is Workast's Slack-only tier for creating, assigning, dating, reminding and completing tasks. Standard adds the browser app and richer work views, forms, reporting, guest users and integrations. Standard also grants only ten uses per team of selected Professional features, so an occasional successful trial does not prove unlimited use.

Professional extends Standard with subtasks, tags, templates, time tracking and dependencies. The pricing page describes a 14-day Professional trial starting from a Workast task in Slack. After that evaluation the team can choose Standard or Professional; check the actual feature limits before importing a large task process.

Enterprise is intended for larger organizations with multiple Slack workspaces or more security requirements and is handled through an inquiry. The current pricing page has annual and monthly controls, but the captured static text does not establish a reliable single base rate. Confirm the chosen plan, billing period, included users and total in a current quote or checkout.

Professional can cover only a department instead of every person in a Slack workspace. However, assigning work to teammates outside that paid team can move them into the paid group. A user added mid-term and active for more than two days can incur prorated charges; removing a user produces a future credit, not a cash refund.

Guests are not a free workaround for collaborator seats: Workast says a paid team's guest costs the same as a full member. Budget for each contractor who must interact with tasks and verify their Space access at the same time.

Look a little closer

Before you choose

For a safe pilot, choose a test Slack channel, convert a fictional message into a task and check its title, Space, assignee and due date. Confirm who in the channel can see it and where reminders arrive before expanding to a shared operational channel.

If the work is confidential, compare the linked Slack channel with Workast Space privacy and test a private Space on the intended paid plan. A public channel can make its linked Space public, and private-channel task creation is not an Essential entitlement.

Before adding outside collaborators or upgrading a department, estimate the actual paid headcount. Guests cost a full member rate, and task assignments can bring teammates into the paid department. Confirm trial end, monthly versus annual terms, proration and credit behavior against the proposed rollout.

If the team needs dependencies or time logs, test those features on Professional rather than assuming Standard's ten limited uses meet ongoing operations. If the team only needs quick Slack assignments, the extra web interface and advanced structure may add little value.
