UpdraftPlus

What it does

UpdraftPlus is a WordPress plugin for making backups, restoring a previous state and moving a site. A site owner chooses what to copy, when backups run and where they are stored; when needed, the backup set can be selected for restoration or migration. It protects only the data actually included and retained in a usable backup.

Who it is for

It suits WordPress site owners who can administer the plugin and confirm a recovery path, as well as agencies maintaining several sites. Choose a paid license tier by the number of sites that need Premium, while considering storage and the people responsible for checking completed backups.

For a business site, decide the acceptable loss window and how quickly a staging restore must work. A daily or weekly schedule may be enough for a mostly static site; a frequently updated store needs a schedule matched to its own content and orders.

The work it supports

Core capabilities

The free plugin supports manual backups and scheduled file and database backups. The publisher lists intervals from every two hours through monthly, and the files and database can be scheduled separately. Record which directories are included and which are excluded before trusting the schedule.

Email reporting can tell the WordPress administrator whether a backup succeeded; Premium describes more detailed reports. A pilot should also inspect the actual backup set and its destination, because an emailed success notice alone does not prove a restore will work.

Free UpdraftPlus can send backup sets to supported destinations including Google Drive, Dropbox and Amazon S3. Premium adds destinations such as OneDrive, Azure, SFTP and Backblaze and can copy to more than one location. Each remote provider may need its own account, storage capacity and charges.

By default, backups stay on the same hosting server under wp-content/UpdraftPlus. Choose and verify an off-site destination so a hosting outage does not also remove access to the only copy; monitor storage quotas and credentials for that destination.

The free version can retain a chosen number of backup sets. Premium lists advanced age-based cleanup. Decide a retention span that covers mistakes discovered late, and check that cleanup cannot remove the last known-good restore point.

For a restore to the same site and URL, the guide has the administrator select a backup set and choose the sections to restore. If the set is missing, it can be rescanned from remote storage or uploaded. Test a copy on staging and verify pages, media, accounts and recent data before any production rollback.

The publisher also documents manual recovery when WordPress Admin is unavailable, provided the backup files can be accessed. That path is more involved and may require recreating WordPress core and configuration; retain independent hosting access and a written recovery procedure.

Free migration uses a source-site backup restored on a destination WordPress site; the publisher says both Free and Premium include a search-and-replace engine for changed URLs. Premium adds direct site-to-site transfer and more selection control. Before moving a live site, test links, media and destination logins; the guide warns that restoring the source database can replace destination credentials.

Premium offers incremental backups and automatic backup immediately before updates. It also expands scope to configuration files and non-WordPress tables. Confirm the desired items are actually selected and that server load and storage remain manageable.

Pricing and getting started

UpdraftPlus Free covers core manual/scheduled backup and restore, while Premium adds incremental and pre-update backup, more storage destinations, direct migration and expanded backup scope. Check the current feature comparison for the exact option the site needs.

The viewed publisher cards show Personal at $70/year for up to two sites, Business at $95 for ten, Agency at $145 for 35, Enterprise at $195 for unlimited sites, and Gold at $399 for unlimited sites plus 50GB storage. The non-Gold cards list 1GB. The page offers EUR/GBP/USD and VAT controls, so confirm the buyer’s displayed currency, tax and any external storage costs before purchase.

Premium subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. The publisher says the installed Premium plugin remains usable after the 12-month term, but new fixes, features, updates and premium support require renewal. A live WordPress site should budget for compatibility updates and verify current terms.

Look a little closer

Before you choose

A practical test starts with a fictional or staging WordPress site: configure remote storage, run a manual file-and-database backup, inspect the complete set, restore a copy, and compare content and login behavior. Repeat after a plugin/theme update and document who responds to failed reports.

The plugin is one part of recovery. Verify what the host backs up, whether WordPress core and wp-config are included, remote-storage ownership and quota, and whether recovery is possible when WordPress Admin is down. No backup schedule by itself guarantees a successful restore.
