SurePayroll

What it does

SurePayroll by Paychex is an online payroll service aimed at U.S. small businesses. An employer enters business, worker, bank and tax details, then runs payroll for employees or contractors. The main plan choice is whether SurePayroll files and deposits payroll taxes or the employer handles those tasks.

Find your fit

Who it is for

The small-business offer is marketed to solopreneurs and micro businesses with up to five employees. That is a description of its target customer, not a verified account-size limit. It is a plausible shortlist candidate for a U.S. employer seeking routine payroll, direct deposit, records and optional tax filing.

It can cover W-2 employees and 1099 contractors, including salaried and hourly workers with multiple pay rates. A buyer with both worker types should confirm each person’s classification and test a representative pay run before switching live payments.

The work it supports

Core capabilities

The service advertises unlimited payroll runs, including off-cycle runs without an added run fee. Payroll can also be scheduled automatically. Test how approvals, changes and corrections fit the actual pay calendar before relying on automation.

The displayed plan includes free two-day direct deposit. Confirm the funding cutoff, first-run timing and worker eligibility for the chosen schedule; a public feature description is not a guarantee that every payment lands in two days.

Employers can access reports and paystubs online, while the mobile app supports employer payroll actions and employee access to paystubs and account details. Check that the records available to employees match the business’s privacy and retention requirements.

Full Service is described as filing and depositing payroll taxes, including federal, state and local payroll taxes. No Tax Filing retains the other plan features but leaves filing and depositing all payroll taxes to the employer. Confirm the responsibilities, jurisdiction setup and any exceptions in the agreement before selecting a plan.

The vendor says it prepares, provides and files required W-2 and 1099-NEC forms. The pricing page separately lists an annual form charge; verify the chosen plan’s form handling and review sample year-end outputs.

The feature list also includes new-hire reporting and benefit-related deductions such as health insurance and 401(k) contributions. Use a test worker with the actual pay rates and deductions to see whether the resulting paystub and reports meet the accountant’s needs.

SurePayroll advertises live phone and chat support plus free onboarding help. Allow time to collect company, employee, bank and tax records and reconcile starting balances when moving from another payroll provider.

Understand the offer

Pricing and getting started

The small-business page currently displays two base-price sets: Full Service at $29 or $39 per month plus $7 per employee, and No Tax Filing at $20 or $29 per month plus $4 per employee. The lower display is presented beside a limited-time offer. Ask for a dated total that names the applicable base, worker count and offer terms rather than treating either display as a guaranteed checkout price.

The pricing calculator says the first state is included, multi-state payroll adds $9.99 monthly, and a separate fee can apply where local taxes are required. Year-end W-2 and 1099-NEC forms are listed at a $50 annual base plus $5 per form. Include these amounts in a full-year estimate.

Optional accounting integration is listed at $4.99 monthly, and timeclock integration starts at $5 monthly plus $3 per employee. A current offer advertises alternating free months in the first year. Check eligibility, renewal price and the cost of the exact integrations needed.

Look a little closer

Before you choose

For a trial, enter a harmless sample with an hourly employee, a salaried employee and a contractor; include an off-cycle adjustment and a benefit deduction. Compare gross pay, withholding, net pay, paystubs and reports with the existing payroll process before moving real worker data.

Tax filing is the consequential decision. Get written confirmation of who registers in each jurisdiction, who deposits and files each tax, who handles notices or corrections, and what the employer must approve. The public pages describe capabilities, but this research did not operate an account or verify any actual payroll or tax filing.
