SilverBullet

What it does

SilverBullet stores linked knowledge as Markdown files in spaces you control. A local Desktop app and browser-based Server offer different deployment paths; pages can include tasks, queries and scripts. The Server is MIT licensed, while Desktop has separate personal and work-use terms.

Find your fit

Who it is for

It fits an individual building a connected note system, a team collecting shared knowledge, or a product group keeping documentation beside code. Choose whether the space belongs only on one computer, on a server reached from browsers, or across both through sync.

Expect some setup decisions: a self-hosted Server needs suitable storage and backups; Desktop work use requires the right Pro license. People seeking programmable views can use Space Lua, while a simpler note workflow can start with Markdown pages and links.

The work it supports

Core capabilities

Each space is a folder of Markdown pages alongside images and PDFs. You can read the underlying files in another editor, keep them under version control and plan a file-level exit path without depending on a proprietary export format.

Write in a live-preview Markdown editor with links, tasks, tables and code. Add wiki links between pages; linked mentions reveal where a topic is referenced, helping a scattered set of notes form a navigable knowledge base.

Keep checklists within meeting notes or journal pages and collect incomplete tasks across the space. Live queries can show selected notes or task views directly in a page, updating as the content changes.

Space Lua can add commands, widgets and automations inside the space. Start with the built-in editing/linking workflow before committing to custom scripts that someone will need to maintain.

Desktop opens a local folder on macOS, Windows or Linux. Its files stay on that machine unless you configure sync; the Server route runs as a browser-accessed application on infrastructure you operate or a separate host.

Desktop can sync to a SilverBullet Server using its URL and supported credentials. A browser/PWA client keeps a local copy for offline editing, then syncs while its service worker is active; background or closed clients may not exchange changes immediately.

Browser pages are synced locally by default, but document attachments are fetched on demand unless configured for offline syncing. Test a representative PDF or image while disconnected before assuming a whole space is available offline.

If two clients edit the same words at nearly the same time, SilverBullet may leave a visible conflict for resolution. Treat collaboration and offline sync as workflows to test with a sample space, especially around intermittent connections.

Understand the offer

Pricing and getting started

SilverBullet Server is free, MIT licensed and usable for home or work on self-managed hardware. SilverBullet Desktop is a separate proprietary app: Personal is free for personal/education use, while work use requires Pro.

The current Desktop Pro page displays $50 per user per year. Pro adds work-use rights, Meta Space, an Edge release channel and bulk seats; one license belongs to one user across that user’s devices. Confirm currency, taxes and the current checkout before purchase.

A provider-hosted Server is a separate option; the site currently shows PikaPods from $2/month. That indicative provider price is distinct from both the free self-hosted Server license and Desktop Pro.

The Desktop terms describe Pro as recurring. If it ends, the local notes remain and the app continues to work, but Pro-only features lock until resubscription; verify the present billing and cancellation terms when buying.

Look a little closer

Before you choose

Make a small test space with Markdown pages, linked topics, a task query and an attachment. Open the files outside SilverBullet, then test any planned sync and offline access so the exit and recovery path is concrete.

If self-hosting, choose a case-sensitive Server file system and stable modification timestamps. The official install guidance warns that mismatched page-name casing or unreliable timestamps can cause file and sync problems.

Back up the actual space files separately from sync. Desktop terms leave local backups and the security/availability of a selected remote Server to the operator; sync alone is not a backup or a tested restore.

For a team, check which people use the browser Server versus the proprietary Desktop app before assigning Pro seats. Rehearse a simultaneous-edit conflict and a period offline, including whether documents are cached.
