Seafile

What it does

Seafile organises files in project or document libraries, synchronises selected libraries to devices, and lets teams share files or folders through links and permissions. File versions support recovery within each library's retention window. Buyers choose among free self-hosted Community, licensed self-hosted Professional, and SeafilePlus Cloud, a separately priced managed service.

Who it is for

A team that needs a shared file library across computers can use Seafile to organise project documents, control who may edit them, and recover earlier versions. It should decide who runs the server before choosing an on-prem edition.

SeafilePlus Cloud may suit a team wanting the vendor to handle deployment and maintenance, with added file properties and collaborative documents. Check which edition supplies the specific search, audit, sharing and document tools required before buying.

The work it supports

Core capabilities

Libraries and sync. Group files by project or document type, then select the libraries to sync to each desktop. Local changes are uploaded to the server. When connecting an existing folder, inspect possible conflict files before treating both sides as identical.

External handoff. Create a share link for a file or folder with password, expiry and access choices, or create an upload link when someone should send files into a folder without browsing its contents. A share link can work without an account, so treat its distribution as an access decision.

Team access. Share libraries or folders with logged-in people or groups using read-write, read-only, admin or online modes. The manual cautions that preview-only and online read-only mainly remove a download button; technically capable users may still retrieve the original file.

File recovery. Seafile keeps previous versions and can restore one, but the library's history setting limits how far back file versions, deleted-file recovery and snapshots go. Set and test that period for the team's actual recovery needs.

Professional Edition search. The on-prem Professional Edition adds full-text file search compared with Community. Verify that search and any other advanced control in a small test library before relying on it in a migration plan.

Plus Cloud document organisation. SeafilePlus Cloud adds custom file properties and views such as table, gallery, kanban and map. Its SeaDoc and wiki tools support collaboration around the files; these Cloud-specific features should be checked separately from the self-hosted editions.

Pricing and getting started

Community Edition is free and open source for a self-hosted installation. Professional Edition is a separate annual on-prem license; the published schedule has a free three-user option, a nine-user special offer and per-user tiers above that. Confirm current seat count and support terms before ordering.

SeafilePlus Cloud is a different SaaS purchase. The current official grid lists a free trial and a Team plan charged per user per month, with 1 GB trial storage, 500 GB Team storage and three months of Team file-version retention. Compare the live grid and contract for the actual team size.

The Plus Cloud pricing page says a trial account is inactivated after 30 days and deleted within 90 days. Export any evaluation files before that window closes and confirm current terms before loading business content.

Look a little closer

Before you choose

Try a representative library on two desktops, including one existing folder with different file contents. Inspect the conflict files and confirm the intended sharing permission after sync.

Check external sharing with an unprivileged recipient. Passwords and expiry help govern share links, but the documented online preview-only mode should not be treated as a file-exfiltration barrier.

Decide the recovery window per library and test restoration of an old version and a deleted file. A short retention setting ends access to older history and snapshots.

Map needed features to the exact edition: Community for core self-hosted sync, Professional for advanced on-prem functions, or Plus Cloud for the managed document workspace. Check support and trial data handling with the vendor before moving live files.
