Find your fit
Who it is for
It suits infrastructure teams already using Proxmox VE and operators willing to run a dedicated backup server, choose storage, manage access and test recovery. Start with a fictional or disposable VM and document the restore goal before selecting retention and support coverage.
A smaller lab can evaluate the free software and Community subscription route. Production buyers should compare Basic, Standard and Premium support against their actual response needs and time zone, especially while Standard 24/7 coverage remains a future promise.
The work it supports
Core capabilities
Clients send changed backup data to the server, where deduplication avoids storing repeated chunks. A datastore holds snapshots and chunks, so size the actual disks or object store for source data, retention and growth.
Use backup manifests and scheduled verification to check data integrity. Verification helps find damaged chunks, but a separate restore exercise is needed to show an application or file can be recovered on the required timeline.
Prune rules decide which snapshots remain; garbage collection later reclaims chunks no longer referenced. Model a fictional retention policy and storage headroom before deleting old points, especially when several systems share chunks.
Restore whole VM/container workloads or selected files and directories. Try a disposable example of both full and granular recovery, including access permissions and target space, before depending on a production recovery-time assumption.
Remote synchronization can place datastore content on another Proxmox Backup Server. Plan separate-site credentials, link capacity and a restore from the remote copy; replication alone does not demonstrate independent recoverability.
S3-compatible object storage is a supported datastore backend. It requires an endpoint and provider account; storage, requests, bandwidth and egress may add charges.
Client-side encryption is available when a key is configured. Record who controls the key and how it can be recovered before encrypting critical backups; loss of the key can make a backup unusable despite healthy storage.
The vendor recommends a dedicated server and provides an ISO installation route. Check CPU, RAM, disks and supported version against the current system requirements before planning deployment, then separate OS/server maintenance from the backup workload itself.

Pricing and getting started
The AGPLv3 software is free to download and use. Paid subscriptions are per backup server and primarily change stable repository/support coverage, not a meter on backup clients or stored data. Unlimited licensing does not include disks or an object-storage bill.
The current annual page shows Basic €1,120, Standard €2,240 and Premium €4,480 per server before applicable VAT. Confirm currency, region, server count, term and checkout amount with the vendor or reseller.
Premium 24/7 support is stated as available since October 19, 2026. Standard 24/7 is described as becoming available by the end of 2026; compare the present coverage window and critical first-response rules rather than treating the promise as active.
Community is positioned for labs and noncritical workloads with stable Enterprise Repository access but no enterprise ticket support. For a production restore dependency, decide what internal skill and paid escalation route are required.
Look a little closer
Before you choose
Run a fictional backup, scheduled verification and full or file-level restore before relying on the setup. A successful upload or checksum check is narrower than proving the recovery path, permissions and target capacity.
Write down snapshot retention, pruning and garbage-collection schedules with actual datastore headroom. If using S3 or a remote server, include third-party charges and a recovery check from that destination.
If using encryption, keep the recovery key separate from the protected system and test the documented restore path with disposable data. An unreadable key can defeat otherwise intact backups.
Choose support for the date and geography of your operations. Free use, Community repository access and paid support tiers are distinct, and Standard 24/7 coverage was still a future commitment on the checked page.
