Notesnook

What it does

Notesnook is a private note-taking workspace for writing, organizing and retrieving notes across web, desktop and mobile. A note can appear in several notebooks, take tags, sync across devices and stay available for offline editing. The vendor describes end-to-end encryption; its recovery model makes custody of keys and backups important.

The Free plan has unlimited notes and devices with sync, backups and the private vault. Paid tiers mostly expand attachment and organization limits and add controls such as app lock; price is localized at checkout.

Find your fit

Who it is for

A person gathering research or everyday reference can keep one note in more than one notebook and use tags to find it from different contexts. Start with a few notes to decide how much structure is useful.

A user moving between phone and computer can edit while offline and let encrypted sync catch up when connected. Check attachment availability separately; first access may need a connection unless full offline mode is enabled.

Anyone storing sensitive notes should understand the difference between account encryption and the optional vault password. Plan a recovery-key and backup routine before losing access to a device or account.

The work it supports

Core capabilities

Organize notes into notebooks and tags. A single note can belong to several notebooks without being copied, while tags give an additional cross-cutting way to collect related ideas.

Sync is included on unlimited devices across plans, with notes encrypted on the device before transfer. Local-first editing works without a connection; reconnect to let changes propagate.

Attach images or files to a note, then watch the plan’s monthly attachment-storage and per-file limits. Note text itself does not count toward the published storage allowance.

Create an encrypted local backup and schedule regular backups. Keep an additional copy in a place you can reach if the device fails, and test a restore with harmless notes.

Use the account recovery key or a backup file to recover encrypted notes if a password is forgotten. The provider says it cannot restore data when both the account password and recovery key are lost.

Put particularly sensitive notes in the private vault for a separate password layer. Restore or copy any earlier versions you need first, because moving a note into the vault erases its version history.

Preview an earlier edit session and either restore it over the current note or save it as a new copy. Version history is local to the device, capped by plan, and cleared on logout.

Import a sample from another note app or common text format, then check its formatting and attachments. Export individual or multiple notes to common formats; on desktop and web, PDF is limited to one note at a time.

Publish a selected note through a Monograph link if you need to share it outside Notesnook. Password-protect sensitive material and remember that an unprotected public URL can be opened by anyone who gets it.

Understand the offer

Pricing and getting started

Free has no trial deadline and includes unlimited notes, unlimited devices, sync, backups, vault and Monographs. Its current limits include 50 notebooks and tags, 50 MB of monthly attachment storage, 10 MB per file and 100 stored versions per note.

Essential, Pro and Believer increase limits and add features cumulatively. The official Help says paid prices depend on the payment method’s country and paid-plan trials require a valid payment method; confirm the actual amount and renewal period in the intended store or checkout.

If a paid plan ends, existing notes and attachments remain readable and continue syncing, while new items above Free caps and paid-only controls stop. Review app lock before expiry because it is disabled on downgrade.

Look a little closer

Before you choose

Before migrating a large archive, import a small sample with images and formatting, organize it across notebooks and tags, then export it again in the format you expect to retain.

Save the recovery key and a backup outside the device, then test the restore path with harmless data. Sync and local version history serve different purposes; logout clears local history.

Check whether the Free caps are enough for your notebooks, tags, attachments and versions before buying. Prices and trial terms depend on region and checkout, and the Free plan itself has no trial clock.

For any note shared as a link, verify password and publication settings using non-sensitive text. Vault protection and public Monograph sharing are separate choices.
