Who it is for
A network operator replacing spreadsheets can model a sample site, rack, switch and IP prefix, then check whether the relationships reflect a real installation. NetBox suits teams willing to maintain an authoritative infrastructure record.
A data center team can reuse device types for repeated hardware, represent ports and cables, and inspect the rack placement of equipment. Verify templates and connections against the physical rack before trusting the model.
A team with virtual infrastructure can put VMs and clusters beside physical devices and model address assignments. This is useful when one change needs both hardware and virtual context.
A team planning automation can query the APIs or add a supported discovery integration. Treat synchronization as a separate project: decide which system owns each field and test conflict handling before broad deployment.
The work it supports
Core capabilities
Organize a network geographically by region and site, then add locations and racks. Rack records can carry dimensions and status; start with one representative site before modeling the full estate.
Create a device from a reusable type so interfaces and other components follow its hardware model. Compare the generated ports with the actual switch or server, especially for modular equipment.
Document cable connections between modeled components. A diagram of the expected path is only as reliable as the rack and port records behind it, so verify a sample end to end.
Build an IP hierarchy from prefixes to ranges and individual IPv4 or IPv6 addresses. Model VRFs and VLANs where needed, then test an overlapping-prefix example before loading live address plans.
Add VMs and clusters to the same infrastructure record. A VM can have virtual interfaces and IP addresses, while physical cable connections remain a different kind of object.
Extend the model with custom fields and plugins, or use REST and GraphQL APIs to read or update data. Check authentication and ownership so external automation does not silently overwrite the chosen source of truth.
NetBox Labs lists discovery integrations for selected controllers and network platforms. Verify the specific connector, edition and synchronization direction; core NetBox modeling does not by itself prove every device is discovered automatically.

Pricing and getting started
Community is the open-source, self-supported path. Its licence fee is free, but the team must plan infrastructure, upgrades, backups and support.
Cloud is managed by NetBox Labs; Enterprise is a self-managed commercial path, including air-gapped options. Compare operational responsibility, deployment location and security requirements before choosing.
Cloud Starter, Professional and Premium are contact-sales tiers. The current page differentiates environment count, SSO/group mapping, plugins and support but does not display a fixed price; request a written quote for the target footprint.
Discovery, Assurance, Analytics and visual tools are presented as separate platform capabilities. Check each requested feature in the actual quote instead of assuming that “NetBox” includes the full platform.
Look a little closer
Before you choose
Before migration, model one fictional site with a rack, device type, cable path and small test IP prefix. Ask an operator to compare every connection and address against a known reference, then decide who owns corrections.
If keeping records current is critical, test one supported integration against safe sample data and review how manual edits, controller changes and synchronization conflicts are reconciled.
For the edition decision, estimate Community operations or obtain Cloud/Enterprise terms for data region, environments, support and add-ons. Keep discovery and other platform tools as explicit line items.
