Who it is for
Small and midsize teams whose support work mostly comes through web forms and email can use Hesk to keep requests in one ticket queue. Before choosing it, map how a typical request enters, who answers it and when it should be escalated.
Teams with their own PHP/MySQL hosting may prefer to run Hesk Free and manage installation, updates and backups themselves. Teams that want Hesk to operate the infrastructure can compare Cloud plans, including staff limits and any cloud-only modules.
The work it supports
Core capabilities
Web tickets. A customer can submit a request through the help desk, while staff assign it, track progress and reply. Test a common request from both customer and staff views so the form asks for the information needed to resolve it.
Email-to-ticket intake. Hesk describes email fetching as an optional configuration, and customer email replies can be recorded after it is set up. Verify that an existing support mailbox can be connected and that a reply joins the intended ticket before relying on email intake.
Categories, priorities and statuses. These fields help separate issues by type and urgency. Create a small set of categories that matches the team's real work, then test whether custom statuses make handoffs clearer.
Category-based assignment. A category can automatically assign incoming tickets to team members. Pilot one category with a primary and backup responder so requests do not stall when someone is away.
Custom forms. Hesk lists custom forms and fields that vary by category. Collect the information a responder needs, while keeping the customer form short enough to complete.
Reusable answers. Canned responses help staff answer repeated ticket questions, and the built-in knowledge base can give users self-help articles. Review both types of content periodically so old instructions do not circulate as current advice.

Pricing and getting started
Hesk Free is a self-hosted download for the organization's own PHP/MySQL environment. The organization handles installation, updates, backups and server configuration. Budget the staff time and hosting needed even when the software download is free.
An optional Hesk License for a self-hosted installation removes Hesk branding and includes email support for core Hesk. It does not add product features or provide hosting, setup or backups. Check the current license terms for the number of installations needed.
Hesk Cloud is a managed option: Hesk handles hosting, updates, daily backups and SSL. Cloud plans use flat monthly or annual pricing with staff limits; some modules are available only in Cloud and may depend on the chosen tier. Compare the actual plan and staff allowance before treating a cloud-only capability as included.
Look a little closer
Before you choose
Pilot a full ticket: submit it from the web form, route it through a category, answer with a canned response, and publish a general answer in the knowledge base. This reveals where forms, assignment and reusable content need adjustment.
If email is the main support channel, set up optional email-to-ticket fetching and test replies from a real sample mailbox. Do not assume that simply installing Hesk will convert incoming mail into tickets.
For self-hosting, name an owner for server configuration, updates and backups. The paid branding/support license does not transfer these jobs to Hesk; Cloud does include managed infrastructure, subject to its service terms.
When comparing Hesk Free with Hesk Cloud, check the required staff count and module list. Some additional modules are Cloud-only, and the optional self-hosted license does not unlock them.
