Who it is for
A small team can use Docmost for internal guides, project notes and shared reference material. Spaces separate areas of work; nested pages and comments let people organize and discuss documents while a page history records revisions.
Organizations willing to operate their own service can start with Community. If a rollout needs individual-page confidentiality, single sign-on, AI or governance controls, compare Business and Enterprise rights before relying on the free edition.
The work it supports
Core capabilities
Organize documentation as workspace, space and page. A team may create spaces for departments or projects and nest pages into a tree. Assign space members roles such as Full Access, Can Edit or Can View so ordinary work has a clear home and audience.
Write together in the rich-text editor. Multiple people can work on a page concurrently, Markdown shortcuts speed formatting, and inline comments keep discussion next to the material being reviewed.
Use page history to inspect earlier content and restore a prior version when an edit needs reversing. Test this with a sample page, since the saved-history cadence is different from a formal approval or records-retention policy.
Search page content across accessible spaces and narrow results by space or content type. Searching inside PDF and DOCX attachments belongs to the paid editions, so test the actual document types and plan before relying on attachment text retrieval.
Share a page by public link when outside readers need access. An option can include child pages. Paid editions let workspace or space administrators disable public sharing for their scope; review the child-page setting before publishing a page hierarchy.
Bring in Markdown or HTML pages, including ZIP archives for a larger import. Export a page or entire space in Markdown or HTML, optionally with subpages and attachments; compare a small round trip before treating export as a complete migration or backup plan.
Groups simplify space membership, but individual page restrictions are a licensed Business or Enterprise function. In Community, space roles are the main access boundary. Test a confidential example with the actual intended edition and accounts.
Business or Enterprise can enable AI writing and AI Answers after an administrator configures a model provider. Enterprise adds audit logs, SIEM integration and page verification. These are edition-specific options, not assumptions about a fresh Community installation.

Pricing and getting started
The Open Source/Community edition is free under AGPL-3.0. Business and Enterprise are commercial licenses activated with a key. The current self-managed pricing page lists Business at $6 per seat per month when billed annually, with at least ten seats; the captured dollar sign does not specify a currency code, so confirm the checkout currency and total.
Business adds SSO, AI, granular page permissions, Confluence import and email support; Enterprise is custom-priced and adds governance controls such as audit logs, SIEM and page verification. A free commercial trial key is offered, but confirm exact duration and feature entitlement when requesting it.
Docmost recommends Docker for self-hosting and supplies a Compose setup. The operator must account for its own server administration and recovery process. Docmost also points to a separate Cloud offering; the Business amount above comes from the self-managed pricing page, so do not assume Cloud uses the same terms.
Look a little closer
Before you choose
Pilot one space with two editors and a reader. Write a nested page, leave an inline comment, revise it, restore an earlier version and search for it from the reader account. This checks the daily collaboration and retrieval path before a larger content import.
Before sharing any page publicly, inspect whether child pages follow the link. If the team needs workspace-wide sharing controls or confidential individual pages, verify the required paid edition rather than assuming Community can enforce those boundaries.
Export a representative space with and without attachments and inspect the resulting files. If migrating from another wiki, verify which import formats are available in the chosen edition, then budget the self-hosted installation or obtain a separate Cloud quote.
