Bareos

What it does

Bareos is an open-source backup and recovery platform for IT teams protecting a mix of physical systems, virtual machines and databases. A Director coordinates jobs and retention, client File Daemons collect data, Storage Daemons write to chosen targets, and operators use a WebUI and catalog to find and restore data. The customer plans and runs this backup environment.

Find your fit

Who it is for

It fits IT teams that want one centrally managed backup system across Linux, Windows, macOS or FreeBSD and are willing to configure their own storage, schedules, retention and recovery process. The right fit depends on the actual operating systems, workload plugins and restore objectives in the environment.

The free Community route is useful for teams comfortable using public packages and community resources. Organizations that require maintained binaries, older package versions, selected workload plugins or vendor support should evaluate the subscription path and its additional cost.

The work it supports

Core capabilities

The Director defines backup and restore jobs, schedules, pools and retention while maintaining the catalog used for restore selection. A File Daemon on each protected system reads data for backup and restores files on request; a Storage Daemon handles the backup volumes and storage devices. Deployment planning should include network access and ownership of these components.

Storage choices include disk, tape and S3-compatible object storage. Tape and separated or WORM storage can support an offline or harder-to-modify copy, but the protection depends on how the buyer configures access, rotation, retention and recovery.

Bareos supports full, differential and incremental backup patterns. Its Always Incremental scheme is for file-based backups and does not cover every workload or plugin. Map each workload to a supported mode and test the expected transfer and retention pattern with real data.

The WebUI provides job monitoring, catalog browsing and restore controls, with role-based access for different operators. A practical evaluation should include restoring a single file and a representative larger workload, then checking whether the team can find the required backup version within its recovery time target.

Plugins extend Bareos to virtual infrastructure, databases and disaster recovery workflows. Entitlements differ: the vendor singles out selected Proxmox, Hyper-V and Barri plugin binaries for subscriptions. Confirm the exact plugin, workload version and recovery method before assuming coverage.

Security controls described by Bareos include TLS between components, client-side encryption and signing, checksums and verification jobs. Its backup format can also help deduplication on systems such as ZFS, VDO or btrfs. These capabilities need configuration and a restore test; the vendor does not promise a particular space saving or immunity from loss.

Pricing and getting started

Bareos Community is AGPLv3 open source and can be used without buying a subscription. The public repository provides the current release and source code; a subscription adds maintained packages, older versions and selected plugin binaries. Check whether the workloads on your list require those subscription components.

The vendor advertises subscriptions from €480 per year. Its calculator counts the larger of source data in TB or clients plus plugin jobs, rounded to the next ten units with at least ten units. Enter an actual environment in the calculator and request a formal quote; the on-page estimate is not binding.

Professional support requires a subscription and is priced separately, with the public page showing an entry point of €1,080 per year. Response level and optional services change the total. Temporary trial access can help test selected subscription plugins before committing, subject to Bareos's current access terms.

Look a little closer

Before you choose

Inventory the systems, databases, virtual platforms and storage targets that need protection. For each, verify the relevant plugin, backup mode, required subscription entitlement and restore path. In particular, do not generalize Always Incremental support beyond file-based workloads.

A successful scheduled job is only part of a recovery plan. Test restores from the intended storage tier, check operator access and catalog navigation, and practice a failure scenario with the people who will operate the Director, clients and storage.

Compare the free Community route with the full subscription-plus-support quote, including plugin jobs, data volume and service level. The public starting prices alone do not describe the cost of a specific deployment.
